The weather might have been gloomy but it did not dampen the spirits of people at Pudsey Carnival 2008.

The parade was launched from Queen's Park to mark the start the 20th carnival, since it was revived on 1988.

The theme of this year's Carnival was World, Food and Costume which was captured in the winning float from the 4th Pudsey Scout Group with their China-themed display.

The Leeds All Stars Majorettes won the Best Troupe award and there was a performance by Dingle Fingle, a clown act, to entertain the children.

Pudsey Civic Society helped to keep the rain off the crafts stands by providing a giant marquee to beat the rain.

Organiser Maureen Harrison said: "It is a relief when the day comes but
everything went off without any hitches.
"It was just a shame that the weather didn't manage to hold out for Saturday but we seem to be used to that whenever it is carnival time in Pudsey.

"The winning float was very good and they even made a large dragon as the centrepiece.

"We were slightly down on the amount of money that we raised this year but that could be a result of the current economic market or simply because the weather wasn't up to much.

"The people who I spoke to had a great day."

Around £460 was raised along the parade route for the Soldiers,
Sailors, Airmen and Families Association and the Pudsey RSPCA shop.

Plans are already in the pipeline for next year's event and the chosen charity will be the Pudsey-based Northern Star Display Band.

Maureen added: "We are thinking that we might have some sort of musical theme for next year to help promote our chosen charity."
