Students have hit the airwaves at Grangefield School to broadcast their very own radio station from the comfort of their classroom.
Radio Grangefield was set up at Grangefield School 22 years ago during a lesson about the composer Mozart and pupils pretended to interview him live on the radio.

Since then it has remained a popular focus in school life and students have been presenting, interviewing and recording for the station during the day.

Assistant headteacher Les Barnes, who started up the station, said: "If children want to get involved they can come to see us and we will find something for them to do.

"The youngsters have been fantastic and we have trusted them to get on with things and make it a success.

"The experience that they gain is brilliant and there has been a great buzz about the classroom.

"It is set in real time and everyone who puts the station together takes things really seriously.

"We have recently bought a new broadcast desk which we are putting to good use and all the students work together to produce the shows."

Fern Pullan, who is in Year 13, has been involved in the radio station for six years but is due to leave the school for university this summer.

She said: "I think it is a great opportunity for younger pupils because there are not that many community stations that young people can get involved with.

"I have been presenting the City Beat programme where people from local businesses around Yorkshire come in and talk to us and answer questions about what they do.

"We have had people from Harewood House, Castle Howard and Opera North work with us."

The station has even had some famous faces through the doors including the late Calendar presenter Richard Whiteley and actress Gaynor Faye.
