Newlywed Gemma Thompson-Connor ditched her locks after her big day in memory of her little sister.
Zoe Kilby was only 17 when she died from a rare muscle cancer two years ago.

Gemma, 22, cousin Ben Martin, and friend Jordan Mitchell all took part in the sponsored head shave and raised around £850 for the Candlelighters Trust – a charity which helps children and young adults with cancer at St James's Hospital.

Gemma said: "I think if I had thought about doing something like this a few years ago it would have been a big thing for me but it is nothing now really.

"Zoe lost her hair during her treatment and she kept laughing and smiling through it. It made me wonder why my hair was such a big thing to me."

Gemma now plans to do something every year for charity and hopes to pull out the stops next year to mark what would have been Zoe's 21st birthday.

Zoe was just 15 when she was diagnosed with rhabdomyoscarcoma, which only affects 60 people in the UK each year, after she discovered a lump at the top of her right leg.

At first the family thought that she might have pulled a muscle because active Zoe, a pupil at Crawshaw School, was involved with the army cadets.

During her diagnosis she was told that the cancer had spread throughout her body and had to undergo gruelling courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

When Zoe finished her treatment in June 2006 she was only given months to live because the cancer had come back.

During her treatment she wrote a booklet called " A Young Person's Guide to Coping with Chemotherapy".

Following her death, St James's Hospital printed it and gave it out to new patients to help them cope with cancer.

Mrs Kilby said that despite her daughter's condition she still managed to pass her GCSE and AS Level exams with flying colours.

"Zoe was always very positive even in the face of everything and took everything in her stride," she said.

"When Gemma got married this year she had pictures on the top table of both Zoe and my dad, who died shortly after Zoe.

"It was important for us to know that they were there with us in spirit, it was a bittersweet occasion."
